We honor Saint John Henry Cardinal Newman, the Father of Souls, who forever remained devoted to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, composing the Litany of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, when he converted as an Anglican priest into the Catholic church in 19th century England. In an address to the Bishops of England and Wales, on February 1, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI said of Saint Cardinal Newman, “Much attention has rightly been given to Newman’s scholarship and to his extensive writings, but it is important to remember that he saw himself first and foremost as a priest. in this Annus Sacerdotalis, I urge you to hold up to your priests his example of dedication to prayer, pastoral sensitivity towards the needs of his fold, and passion for preaching the Gospel.”
